DescriptionDol-y-dre cowhouse, seemingly completely seperated from the barn when built but later joined to it by the constrution of an infilling bay, stands on a levelled site and forms the W. side of the farmyard. The Ca.1800 range which had lofts over the housing for cattle has been re-built in part and a new king-post truss was inserted sometime in the later 19th century; unfortunately the building is now gutted and only blocked doorways remain to indicate the position of the two bings which seperated the lines of tethering at each end of the cowhouse. There is however no indication as to whether these tethering bays were seperated by calf-pens, situated in the central area under the king-post truss.
The timber-frame of the cowhouse is in tall panels, with braces from the main posts cutting through the struts, and designed to carry weather- boarding. The original tie-beam trusses (Section D-D) have twin raking struts and a central post under; this post along with down-braces from the main wall-posts held a rail to the fence on one side of each bing. The later replacement truss has a mortice-jointed king-post which supports the raking struts and there are up-brace under the tie-beam rising from the wall-posts. The trusses support two trenched-purlins on each side of the roof and a diamond-set ridge-piece; one purlin on the E. side is formed from a main beam of a framed ceiling. the present roof is without rafters and covered with sheeting.
