Description

Royal Commission aerial reconnaissance during the 2018 drought, on 4th July, discovered a narrow-ditched univallate rectangular enclosure on land just to the north of Maesbanadlog farm, Ystrad Meurig. The enclosure is a neat rectangle measuring approx. 70m x 50m, with a north-east facing gateway. It is not regular enough in its construction to be a Roman Camp, and seems too narrow-ditched to represent an Iron Age settlement enclosure. Its position in a strategic pass close to Ystrad Meurig castle may suggest a medieval date, and an association with that site. The cropmark evidence also shows a single row of posts within the enclosure on the south side, possibly representing a hall or building within it.
