This hand-operated 'samson' crane was supplied by W & J Galloway of Manchester. 'Samson' refers to the heavy cast iron post which is set firmly in the ground, and round which the crane swivels. The wooden jib has a cast iron fitting at its upper end with a cast pulley, and is supported by two wrought iron stays. The chain and hook are missing. The lifting capacity was probably one ton or less.
