DescriptionThe northernmost 500m of the Glamorganshire Canal (nprn 34425), above lock no.1 (nprn 91564), included a winding (boat turning) place, several wharves and a dry dock. The given NGR, SO 04155 06815, is the northernmost extremity of the canal and here it widened to form a terminal basin some 30m long by 5.5m wide. The canal was cut back some 60m by the construction of Cyfarthfa Road bridge over the River Taff in the late nineteenth century. To the south of the winding place outside Chapel Row Museum (nprn 409706), at Grid Reference SO 04455 06590, the remains of three canal boats were excavated in September 1979. These were photographed and surveyed by RCAHMW in October 1979.
