The present Abbey Hotel is a mid nineteenth century mansion that replaced an Elizabethan house built from the remains of the Cistercian Abbey (NPRN 16475). The house was built in 1851-4 in an austere 'Tudoresque' Gothick style with prominent gables and a castellated tower. It stood within extensive grounds and gardens (NPRN 86340). It is said to incorporate earlier, possibly medieval cellars.
