Description

OS County series (Brecknock. XXIII.6 1888) depicts a complex of earthworks in Garden Wood. These can be associated with the landscape scheme of Old Gwernyfed Deer Park (nprn 700401; 86068).
A roadway or drive runs from the gateway to the formal gardens below Old Gwernyfed mansion (NPRN 25951). It passes along the wood's southern fringe before crossing the stream running through the wood on a raised causeway. On the eastern side of this is a large embanked hollow or pondbay, 130m long and up to 80m wide. There are other hollows in the wood, possibly also ponds, as well as what appears to be a former stream bed. At the far end of the causeway three avenues of trees fan out across the park.
The second edition OS County series (1904) shows a 'Maze' in the woods west of the causeway.
