Description
The South Wales Railway opened in 1850 as a broad gauge line between Chepstow and Swansea. It served Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend, Neath, and Swansea, and was completed to Neyland via Carmarthen and Haverfordwest in 1856. The SWR amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1862 and the line was converted to standard gauge in 1872.
