Description
Pembrey Harbour was built in 1819 to serve pits at Gwscwm and Pembrey to the north. The harbour was originally a natural creek that was adapted for coal shipping. Following completion of Pembrey Canal in 1824, the link with Kidwelly and Llanelly Canal provided additional traffic. The harbour and the canal were both superseded when Burry Port or Pembrey New Harbour (NPRN 34224) was reached by the Kidwelly Canal in 1837. The only permanent remains are two ruined piers and two sluice gate openings with an entrance width of 122 m (400 ft).
