Description
St John's church is located on the east side of St John's crescent near its junction with Wern Crescent. It was built in 1887-8 to designs of architect E.A.Johnson of Abergavenny, in Decorated style. The church comprises nave and lower chancel, west end towards the road, south-west porch, north vestry and single west gable bellcote. It is constructed of rock-faced Pennant sandstone with Bath stone dressings, on a plinth of mauve Old Red Sandstone.
Inside, the nave is covered by an elaborate arch-braced roof, formed so that major and minor semicircular trusses carry kingposts. Stained glass includes works by Celtic Studios, R.W.Coombes and Wippell & Co.
