Type Of SiteHUT CIRCLE
PeriodIron Age
DescriptionFour poorly-preserved hut circles located on enclosed rough pasture near the west shore of Llyn Cwmystradllyn. They lie in an arc south-west by north-east, on either side of a field wall the construction of which has probably contributed to their poor condition. All four are defined by stony banks with actual or vestigial orthostatic facings. Three of the four are platformed, to a greater or lesser degree, into the prevailing south-east facing slope. They measure between 4m and 6m across. The platforms are cut back up to 0.6m deep and built out to 0.8m high. All are overgrown with bracken and rushes.
Individually, the huts are as follows (described from the south-west):
SH56224483 (NPRN 532528): probably the most poorly-preserved in the group; platform 3m-4m across cut back 0.5m deep and built out 0.8m high; possible orthostat slab on the south-east.
SH56234483 (NPRN 523524): adjacent to a field wall, platform cut back 0.6m deep and built out 0.8m high, embanked on the SW with external orthostats, 4m diameter internally.
SH56244484 (NPRN 532523): the best preserved in the group, located on the north-east side of the wall; a platform 6m across and built out to 0.8m high; embanked on the northern half, especially the north-west where there are inner and outer orthostatic facings up to 0.9m high; on the south is an annex, possibly a porch.
SH56244486 (NPRN 532753): the northernmost in the group, on the north side of a post and wire fence; hut 4m diameter internally, not obviously platformed but defined on the north, south and west by low banking; some vestigial orthostatic evidence on the north and south.
