The remains of the early Iron Mining village on Merthyr Common were recorded by the Ordnance Survey 1st edition County series as already abandoned (Glamorgan. XII.6 1876). It probably grew up around the early nineteenth century and as many as a hundred people may have lived in the village. The foundations of at least fifteen cottages and outlines of gardens can be traced under quarry faces and former spoil tips.
