DescriptionA sixteenth or seventeenth century mansion, remodelled and expanded in the early nineteenth century in the Regency manner.
An east facing two storey house with attics with rendered stone walls under a slate roof framed by end chimney stacks. The five bay main facade is framed by advanced end bays or wings. These have semi circular openings in the gables. The doorway, framed in a hipped porch, is offset to the south in the central recessed block. It leads into what was the cross passage of the original house. This house comprised three main rooms, a central hall with wings, possibly projecting as later, at either end. Surviving internal features include ceiling beams, a massive hall fireplace and a partition wall.
At the south rear was the once famous library, added between 1887 and 1904, and demolished in the 1950s.
A lower service wing runs away to the north, where there is a stable yard with coachhouse and stables.
A seventeenth century and later barn range (NPRN 31150) lies to the east of the house.
OS County series (Brecknock. XXXIV.11) depicts the changing arrangement of grounds and gardens. A large pond show at the front of the house on the 1st edition (1887) had been drained by 1904 (2nd edition) when two rectangular hollows were depicted. The arrangements to the rear were reordered to accommodate the construction of the library.
