The Monmouthshire Canal ran between its northern terminus at SO 2710 0226 in Pontnewynydd, where it met the Blaenavon Railroad (nprn 91617), and the Town Dock (nprn 408352) in Newport. In Pontymoile, at SO 2919 0016, was a junction with the Brecknock & Abergavenny Canal (nprn 85124). The two Canals, along with the Crumlin Branch (nprn 85126) formed the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal (nprn 85172).
The southern end was cut back to a terminal basin at ST 31347 88015 at Blaenavon Wharf in 1879; from 1931 it was further cut back to a basin on the north side of High Street at ST 31109 88422 to allow the construction of Kingsway (A48).
