DisgrifiadLower Hengoed is a cruck timber-framed hall-house of 4-bays with 2-bay hall encased in later stone walling and floored over hall. It has a particularly fine central arch-braced cruck-couple with moulded soffit and quatrefoil and trefoil cusps. External framing of 3-tier square panelling with wattle infill survives in the rear lean-to with original entrance doorway and dais window opening.
[Additional:] Farmstead of late-medieval origin with cruck-framed barn (NPRN 82259) sited at right-angles to cruck-framed house. The house is the most complete of the Radnorshire three-unit cruck-framed 'gentry' hallhouses and has a characteristic ornate central truss. House fully recorded (survey level 4) in 1996, and a felling-date of autumn 1491/2 established dendrochronologically for the crucks (Vernacular Architecture 30: 113). (RFS/2002)
