Disgrifiad1. Rectilinear cropmark complex recorded during July 2018 by the Royal Commission on an east-facing hillslope above Walton Wood, overlooking the valley of the Afon Syfynwy now occupied by Llys y Fran reservoir. The cropmarks were first seen by Terry James during aerial survey for the Dyfed Archaeological Trust in 1989 but were only partially visible. He noted (DAT PRN 14377): 'This cropmark complex was barely visible when noted during air survey in July 1989. It comprises perfectly straight sided positive cropmarks of presumably a field system or a series of paddocks. It is possible that there are buildings in the vicinity - but these are not clear. A Roman date seems probable. This site would certainly be worth re-photographing in another dry year. TAJ 27-11-89'
The complex comprises a broad-ditched rectangular enclosure at the site's grid reference, measuring approx. 83m x 62m, with an internal subdivision. Extending from this main enclosure on the west and north-west sides are two angled ditches describing the southern portions of a larger rectangular enclosure complex measuring overall approx. 170m x 100m. Various other ditches can be seen across the enclosures, which are crossed along their southern side by a more recent field boundary, showing they have some antiquity. No buildings are visible.
The complex may represent a Roman villa or Roman farmstead, particularly with the association of rectangular and polygonal outer enclosures. Recorded during the 2018 drought.

2. Geophysical survey by Dyfed Archaeological Trust in 2019 clarified the cropmarks and demonstrated the existence of a series of formal rectangular and polygonal enclosures, apparently representing a multiperiod later prehistoric and Romano-British farmstead or villa, with round houses also present.
