DisgrifiadIn 1897 the Vale of Glamorgan line was opened from Barry to the Great Western Railway at Bridgend. The line included an impressive 343m long, 16 span viaduct in rock-faced stone with semi-circular brick arch rings, 33.5m high over a deep defile at Porthkerry. Construction of the viaduct was protracted, from 1894 to 1897, due to foundation failure and in 1898 a pier subsided; a temporary diversion was built until the full re-opening of the viaduct in 1900.
