St Mary's church is prominently sited on the east side and above Pentrebach Road (the A470 trunk road). It was built in 1836-7 to designs of architect T.H.Wyatt of London. It is a large Commissioners' church in a minimal neo-Norman style. It comprises nave with north-west tower (now truncated), miniature apsed chancel, and added north-east vestry. It is constructed with rubble stone walls (intended for render) having hammer-dressed quoins to the pilasters, a coursed rock-faced plinth, and lighter freestone dressings to the windows. The interior is wide and barn-like with a flat ceiling, but was apparently designed to have aisles - according to plans.
